Your eye exam

Up

Here is some helpful information about your upcoming eye exam.

The typical comprehensive exam takes 30 to 45 minutes,  or about an hour if you don't fill the information forms on line in advance (hint).

We may want to dilate your pupils (although we never insist on it), so if your are coming in on a sunny day, please bring your sunglasses. If you don't have sunglasses, we can provide you with disposable sun protection. If we dilate your pupils (this is done with eyedrops), you will be very light sensitive and your near vision (reading ability) may be rather poor for a few hours following the exam.

If you are a contact lens wearer, there are two other considerations:

If you plan on getting new contacts, you may come in wearing your lenses, but please also bring your glasses if you have them.

If you plan on getting new glasses, please leave your contact lenses out on the day of the exam. If you don't have glasses, this may be a problem and someone may have to drive you, but it is important because the wearing of contact lenses on the day of the exam can adversely affect the accuracy of the refraction for glasses.

You probably should not wear your contacts for at least an hour after receiving any eyedrops for pupil dilation or glaucoma testing.
